When chatting about Camp Tamakwa, parents will ask many great questions about our activities, our counselor to camper ratio, our values, our staff hiring, our training process and what makes Tamakwa so different and unique. Over the years, we have found that parents love our incredible vista and strong stance against technology. They love our canoe tripping program. They love that we are in Algonquin Park. They admire our history, our spirit, our core values. They love so much of what we try to achieve and uphold at camp. Parents ask great questions, but, we notice we are not asked about our food. Sure, parents ask about our menu selection for their "picky eater" and we frequently answer questions for many of our campers with serious food allergies, but what about questions regarding our commitment to nourishing our campers well?
We regularly hear about new standards for healthy eating in schools across the world, but what about summer camp?
Parents often say, "it's camp, let them eat whatever they want". Well, it's true, it is camp and they should have fun, eat great food and feel like they are indulging, but it certainly doesn’t need to be loaded with unnecessary artificial ingredients or excessive amounts of sugar that are known to be unhealthy. Change is happening across the world. The food industry is waking up and learning that people want clear and truthful labelling. Kids of all ages are actually aware of what GMO stands for. Lead by Margot Perlmutter (who is passionate about making changes at home), we are equally as passionate about making changes at our camp home - for everyone in our summer family.
